Club History
It is unclear exactly when Nhill hosted its first race meeting. Early town records indicate there may have been a race meeting there in 1881, but there is other evidence suggesting 1883 as the date of the Nhill and West Wimmera Race Club’s inaugural meeting. Regardless, thoroughbreds have been racing in Victoria’s far west for some time and, like the rest of Victoria, racing has a rich history there.
When the club joined the North Western District Racing Association in 1930 it changed its name to the Nhill Race Club, but more changes lay ahead. When the Racecourse Licenses Board embarked on a rationalization of country racecourses it had Nhill or Kaniva in its sights. Fortunately for Nhill it survived, amalgamating with the Kaniva and Lockhart (which had raced at Kaniva) clubs to form the Nhill and Districts Racing Club, and continuing to race on the Nhill track.
Nhill hosts just one race meeting a year these days, but racing remains very important to the life of the town. The Nhill Cup is run every year on Boxing Day, giving everyone in town a chance to wind down after their Christmas celebrations. The day attracts a large and festive crowd with all the atmosphere that Australian country race meetings are famous for.
